Bass fishing club reels in state championship
The West Harrison High School bass fishing team has caught a big one, reeling in a state championship.
The bass fishing team won first place at the Mississippi High School Bass Masters State Championship in Jackson. Eighty-four teams from across the state competed in the tournament. The team also won third place in the open division which includes schools from neighboring states.
West Harrison High School’s bass club formed just last year. Bass team member James Willoughby said, “It’s just awesome because last year we tried so hard and we fell a little bit short from winning. This year it was our main goal to come out here and win and we did it.I like to compete because the pros compete the same way. It’s just in a high school format. I’d like to one day become a pro.”
These bass fishing tournaments also offer scholarship opportunities for the students.
From here, the team will go on to compete for the national championship in Kentucky.
