Basketball Officials Remain on Strike

The majority of Gulf Coast basketball officials are staying strong even after the state has said they’ll play this next season of high school basketball without them.
Members of the Gulf Coast Basketball Officials Association went on strike after what they say has been a three year ordeal surrounding their pay. Officials currently only get paid $40 a game, a rate they tell News 25 ranks them near or at the bottom compared to what officials are paid in and around Mississippi.
Yesterday, the Mississippi High School Activities Association informed the officials they’ll be forming a new association of officials with or without them.
Gulf Coast Basketball Officials Association President Joseph Davis said, “You’re pulling from the same 78 officials. Do I not think some of those guys may be interested in doing that? Yes, we do but we’re still getting the basic pull of what you have. Which is people who feel the same way, we’re underpaid and we’re just looking to negotiate to get to where we feel we need to be.”
Officials are asking for a $15 a game raise with an additional five over the next three years.
