Barry Lyons named to Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame

Biloxi native Barry Lyons has devoted most of his life to the game of baseball and now the game is giving back as it comes full circle for the former major leaguer.

Welcome to the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, Lyons was one of eight named to the class of 2022.

Currently the ambassador of the Biloxi Shuckers, Lyons attended Delta State out of Biloxi High School and went on to become an All-American catcher.

He was drafted in the 15th round by the New York Mets in 1982 and has a ring from the 1986 World Series team.

All these years later, Lyons certainly lived up to the high standards he set for himself. “Well, I grew up idolizing my brothers. I had three older brothers – two of which played at Ole Miss, football and baseball – and I grew up on the Ole Miss campus it seems like there for many years. But there was no pressure. But I was referred to as the last of the Lyons boys and I did have a lot to live up to because they set high marks. But I just loved playing baseball. I loved the challenge. I loved competing. And I loved winning.”

Lyons hit 15 career home runs during his time in the major leagues with four different ball clubs.

Others named to the class of 2022 are Maggie Bowen-Hanna, Kermit Davis Sr., David Dellucci, Jim Gallagher Jr., former George County Rebel Eric Moulds, Bob Tyler, and Willis Wright.
