Barrington Development Unveils Plans for City Place and Santa Maria Del Mar
Biloxi residents have been complaining that the old Santa Maria Del Mar building is an eyesore, but today plans were unveiled to give it a facelift.
This morning, Barrington Development unveiled new plans for the new Santa Marie Del Mar and City Place to the Biloxi Development Review Committee. News 25’s Bryan Kennedy has the details.
Today, Barrington Development laid out plans for two of their newest developments. First up were the plans for City Place. Developers say it’ll feature two things downtown Biloxi has been missing: an extended stay hotel and residential apartments.
Cono Caranna, with Barrington Development, said, “So, all of the extended stays are out on I-10 basically or in Gulfport. So, it’ll bring something new which is good for Keesler, good for downtown. Then the residential units for anybody working downtown who wants to live there.”
Restaurants, a bank and retail stores will fill the bottom floor of the three story building. The 22 million dollar project will be located off of Main Street behind the Santa Maria Del Mar. City leaders say it will bring much needed business to downtown Biloxi.
Frank Genzer, the architect that represents Biloxi, said, “This project will mean, and I don’t know how much, but it’ll mean jobs and taxes for the city.” Jobs and taxes from a project that almost never happened. “The developer who originally started it became ill and the project was basically cancelled. Now, the Barrington Group has picked it up and are purchasing the property and are wanting to resurrect the project,” said Genzer.
The developers remodeling the Santa Maria Del Mar are the same ones turning Casino Magic into a water resort. They were fortunate enough that those hotels rooms were almost fully renovated when they bought the property, they weren’t as lucky with the Santa Maria Del Mar.
Cono Caranna says, “We’ll begin with the demolition of Santa Maria on the inside, then we’ll start with the framing out there. But, we’ll have to demolish everything on the inside, take it down to bare concrete and then start from a fresh palette.”
Work is slated to begin in September and should be complete in a year.
