Barge Blocks Dam
Heavy rainfall and a barge trapped against a dam could lead to even more flooding in Northeast Mississippi.
Officials say two barges were pinned against the Stennis Lock and Dam in Columbus. One has already sunk. They say the barges are causing restricted water flow through the dam, which could lead to more flooding in the area. Heavy rainfall has created high water levels in the dam’s headwaters, causing moderate flooding in surrounding neighborhoods.
Engineers say they don’t know when they will move the barges because the current is too swift and too strong.
