Backpack Buddies providing food to families in need in Harrison County

A hunger relief program is helping Harrison County schools provide kid friendly meals.

The Rotary Club of Gulfport Orange Grove, Coast Electric Power Association, and Harrison County School District are joining forces to launch its Backpack Buddies program to help families in need.

Food items were provided by Feeding the Gulf Coast and were delivered today to schools across Harrison County.

The backpacks will include canned goods, mac and cheese, breakfast items, fruit, and snacks.

Rotary Club Secretary Angie Crawford shares the inspiration behind the program. “More recently,  we began the Backpack Buddies for the demand that the kids have in the school. We have a lot that suffer from food insecurities. So, we partner with Feeding the Gulf Coast and this has really become a major event for us.”

The Rotary Club has been in partnership with the Harrison County School District for over 35 years. Backpack Buddies has helped identified other deficiencies kids are facing and has helped the Rotary Club provide more outreach programs.
