Back to School in Ocean Springs

Ocean Springs schools welcomed back students today for the first day of school.
News 25’s Laurene Callander caught up with a few first graders at Magnolia Park Elementary School to see how their big day was going.
School officially began at all public schools in the city today. Teachers tell News 25 the first day jitters never get old. “I think we forget, from year to year, how chaotic the first day is and then it starts to come back, you realize, but then it all turns out fine,” said kindergarten teacher Angela Freeman.
Teachers we spoke with today at Magnolia Park Elementary say the kids had mixed reactions about coming back to school. “Some are excited; some came right in hugging the teacher and looking at all their friends. Some have been a little sad throughout the day,” said Freeman.
The teachers kept the first day pretty simple for the students. The kindergarten and first grade students had some free time to color or get their hands on some Play-Doh. Most importantly, teachers taught the kids what the classroom expectations and rules are. “Keep your hands to yourself. Be quiet when the teacher is talking,” said first grader Gavin Givens.
It was a little too hot outside to have a full recess period, so the students stayed inside and had a freeze dance. Some students were disappointed they couldn’t go outside but with a heat index around 100 degrees teachers thought it would be best to keep the students inside for the day. First grader A.J. Sepe said, “I wanted to go play at the playground, but it’s too hot.” Some students did get to walk around the playground and see what equipment the school offers.
Overall, teachers tell News 25 the day went well. “You know the main goal for today is get them home safely, make sure they all make it home. Make sure they had a good day, so they want to come back tomorrow,” said Freeman.
Gulfport will have their first day of school this Thursday.
