Back Bay Mission reducing backpacks for giveaway due to lack of donations

Every year for Christmas, Back Bay Mission has a backpack giveaway to help their homeless population. Unfortunately, things will be different this year due to lack of donations.

More than 90 backpacks are usually given out each year as Christmas presents that are filled with hats, ponchos, food, and other things that are needed daily when living on the streets.

Typically, during the Christmas season, Back Bay does 150 baskets that have meal fixings to create Christmas meals for families to pick up, but due to funding and lack of donations, they had to reduce their baskets and backpacks.

Back Bay Mission decided because their food pantry is being used heavily, they need to focus on adding more food to their pantry for the community instead of doing the baskets. Emergency Assistant Case Manager Meredith Monforton said, “Because food cost is up 11 percent right now is what the USDA said this year as well as inflation of everything else. It’s bringing more people into our food pantry. We’ve seen a 70 percent increase in the utilization of our food pantry since February.”
