Back Bay island named after Mississippi senator

Earlier today, a local island on Biloxi’s Back Bay dedicated one of the longest-serving legislators in Mississippi history.

DMR and Biloxi city officials gathered this afternoon for the dedication of Gollott Island.

“Yeah, it’s great. They named that island after me, and I can sit on my front porch and see it,” said Gollott. “Every day, I can look at the island that they honored me with.”

“Some of his works give you the basis for the development of the seafood industry, the maintaining of our environment — even gaming, and tourism, and transportation,” said Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich. “He touched every aspect of those things that you need in order to have a community that’s vibrant, prosperous, and has a great future.”

The breakwater is also named after Senator Gollott, being named Godfather Point.

The island is important because it shelters the boat launch.
