Authorities Identify Body Found in Hancock County Lake

Authorities identified the man whose body was found floating in a Hancock County lake as 28-year-old Alex Toups. News 25’s Laurene Callander has reaction from a close friend of Toups, a man who he calls his brother.
Kyle Brown, a close friend of Alex Toups, said, “He was an amazing person and you wouldn’t think it would just happen, especially as young as he was. He’s got a little girl, he’s doing well with his life, he’s about to be a cop and stuff like that. It just doesn’t make sense.”
Brown is still reeling and trying to process the news that his longtime best friend has died. “Even if you’re having a really crappy day, when you see Alex and when he comes in the room or comes in the area, you’re like oh well, it’s going to be a better day now.”
Toups, a Hancock County native, served two tours in Iraq as a soldier in the United States Army. Friends say he was patriotic and a protector, especially when it came to his daughter.
Just how Toups ended up in the Hancock County lake remains a mystery. Authorities have been searching for answers since they received a call Sunday evening, after a few kids found Toups’ body floating in the water. Hancock County Sheriff Ricky Adam said, “They will now confer with the state medical examiner’s office and see what they can come up with and interview a bunch people. So, we’ll see what happens.”
While the cause of Toups’ death has not yet been determined, Brown tells News 25 that Toups will be missed and won’t be forgotten. “He’s not the kind of person you can let go of. You’ll never let go of someone like him, ever. I don’t care if you barely knew him, you’re not going to let go of someone like that. He’s always going to make an impact in your life.”
The cause of Alex Toups’ death is still under investigation. Hancock County Coroner Jim Faulk tells News 25 an autopsy is scheduled in Jackson tomorrow morning.
