Artist gives five-minute art lessons at Roots, Rhythm, and Arts Festival

Also at the Roots, Rhythm, and Arts Festival, it was possible to become an artist in five minutes.

You might not become as immediately skilled as Miguel Davalos, but he’ll give you a good starting point.

The illustrator was out at the arts festival in Gulfport Saturday, giving out five-minute art lessons, teaching the public about contour sketching.

Focus your eye on a single point of an object and as you sketch it, let your pen do the work, without look at the page. Doing this, you free yourself from getting hung up on mistakes.

Your sketch won’t look perfect, but perfection isn’t the point. “If you practice this, it will bring you more ability to accurately render whatever it is you’re drawing, when you actually do want to have it look good.”

You’ll have to catch Davalos at the next festival for a full explanation of the exercise.
