Arson Investigation after Biloxi Church Fire
A Biloxi man is being held on a $50,000 bond and is charged with arson after a church fire on Oak Street.
Biloxi police have arrested a man after he allegedly started a fire at the front doors of a church in Biloxi. Eye witness reports led police to the arrest of 47-year-old Hung Dung Nguyen.
Witnesses tell police they saw Nguyen leaving the Vietnamese Martyrs Catholic Church in Biloxi as it burst into flames around 9:30 this morning. Firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after.
The front doors of the church were badly damaged, but the fire did not spread any further due greatly in part to the quick thinking church pastor who spotted the flames from his office across the street and bystanders who took matters into their own hands by grabbing buckets and a hose and dousing the flames. Biloxi firefighters say the flames were already out by the time they got to the scene.
Thomas Vu, a member of the church, said, “We’re very lucky the pastor saw this. He discovered it quick and tried to spray water on the door. Had it been discovered later, maybe the whole church would be burned.”
No word yet on a motive.
Nguyen is being held at the Harrison County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
