Arlington Heights Students Celebrate Hispanic Heritage

Students at Arlington Heights in Pascagoula had a salsa treat Thursday, but not the one served with a side of chips. Students took time out of their studies Thursday to celebrate the heritage of their large Hispanic population.

The dancers showed off their moves to classmates while educating them about the various dances, instruments, and music that the Hispanic or Latino people are known for. The program was called Baila con Migo, or Dance with Me, which was appropriate, as the dancers pulled several students out of the crowd and taught them some moves. Event organizers tell News 25 why it’s so important to have events like these.

Janelle Rivera, an assistant 1st grade teacher, says, “The kids sometimes, they learn English real quick, but the parents sometimes, they don’t know how to speak the language and sometimes they feel like they’re not part of a school and this is one way to get them to come to a school and feel a part of it because they can understand it, they can relate to the program, they can relate to the dances.”
