Argument over sunglasses leads to fatal shooting in Gulfport

What started as an argument over sunglasses on Monday ended in gunfire — and one man dead.

Gulfport Police report that 16-year-old Lional Cornelius Jackson Jr., of Gulfport was arrested Monday and charged with one count of murder and one count of aggravated assault.

Jackson was taken to the Harrison County jail and held on bonds of $1,000,000 for murder and $250,000 for aggravated assault.

Police say that on Sunday, officers responded to the William Bell Apartments on 65th Avenue in West Gulfport about a shooting about 9:10 p.m. Officers on scene found two victims, one who was shot once and the other with multiple gunshot wounds.

Detectives learned that Jackson and the victim with multiple gunshots had gotten into an argument earlier in the day over sunglasses. Jackson produced a firearm and fired multiple times, hitting the victim he was arguing with. A stray bullet went through a door and struck the other victim.

Jackson fled the scene prior to the officers’ arrival. Both victims were taken to a local hospital. The victim with the single gunshot was listed as stable, while the other victim, identified by Harrison County Coroner Brian Switzer as 25-year-old Kerry Young of Gulfport, died from his injuries.

Anyone with any information regarding the incident is asked to call Gulfport Police at 228-868-5959 or Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers at 877-787-5898.
