April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

As we begin the month of April, you might see people wearing blue and notice pinwheels scattered all around. That’s because April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

As the national symbol for Child Abuse Prevention Month, a blue pinwheel represents innocence and is a positive emblem of the impact we can have when we work together to prevent child abuse.

Workers at the Canopy Children’s Solutions Child Advocacy Center in Gulfport are planting pinwheels across the Coast to help spread awareness.

Canopy Children provides behavioral health, educational, and social services for Mississippi children and adolescents to overcome challenges they may face. Program Director Sabreniee Wright said, “It’s just an eye opener for the maltreatment that takes place. If the child did not disclose about it, no one would know about it. It’s just a way to raise the awareness and get everyone involved and educate the community.”

They’re also asking for everyone to wear blue during the month, especially on Friday, April 2nd and post a photo to social media using #canopygoesblue.
