April 20 marks 16 years since Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

MISSISSIPPI (WXXV)- Monday, April 20 marks 16 years since the Deepwater Horizon Disaster.

On April 20, 2010, 11 people were killed in the rig explosion that caused one of the most damaging environmental catastrophes.

Oil gushed from the seafloor for 87 days, ultimately spewing 134 million gallons into the Gulf.

Toxic sludge washed up on 1,300 miles of shoreline from Texas to Florida, oiling beaches and wetlands as well as killing tens of thousands of birds, sea turtles, and dolphins among other marine life.
