Another gang bill dies

A gang bill dies for the second time at the state capitol. The bill seemed to pass the legislature Tuesday, but two representatives stalled it on a point order, one of those representatives was the bill’s author.
The bill aimed to create enhanced penalties for gang members involved in crimes particularly encouraging young people to join gangs.
Author of the bill Representative Omeria Scott says she stalled action on the bill because she doesn’t feel comfortable with the fact her bill was aimed at a misdemeanor charge for contributing to the delinquency of a minor and was transformed into a hardcore bill with enhanced penalties for gang members.
Stiffening penalties for gang members was a priority for the Mississippi Prosecutors Association this year.
