Animals Rescued from Deplorable Conditions
Thirty animals are in safe hands after Gulfport police and the Humane Society seized them from living in filth. One man is in custody facing over 50 charges in what Humane Society representatives say appears to have been a puppy mill.
“Poo and hair and feathers and just filth, I mean, it was nasty.” Humane Society of South Mississippi representatives recall the horrible conditions they rescued a cockatoo, a Labrador mix and 28 Yorkshire Terriers from. Feces covered the rooms where many of those animals roamed freely. They were also infested with fleas and in need of serious dental work. Maren Slay with the Humane Society said, “It’s pretty obvious these dogs have been bred multiple times back to back. We’d assess it as a large scale backyard breeder situation.”
Sergeant Damon McDaniel with Gulfport police tells News 25 the neglect was at the hands of James Wright, who was warned last month to clean up his place. Now, he faces 30 counts of condition of premises where dogs are kept, 21 counts of failure to provide rabies vaccinations and one count of conditional animal permit.
Slay says this is an example of why it is so important to adopt animals from a shelter or ensure the breeder is a respectable one. “You might find an adorable little puppy and unbeknownst to you, they’re coming from a situation like this, really awful living conditions. We encourage you to adopt. We get puppies in the shelter all the time, all breeds who are looking for loving homes.”
Currently all animals are in stable condition and they will be vaccinated, tested for heartworms, and spay and neutered before being placed for adoption in a couple of weeks.
