Anglers arrive as registration opens for 29th Annual Gulf Coast Billfish Classic

BILOXI, MISS (WXXV) –  The Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic is back — and it’s bigger than ever.

With nearly $2 million in prize money on the line, the 29th annual tournament kicked off with registration day at the bustling marina in Biloxi, drawing competitors and spectators from across the country.

A total of 90 teams are set to hit the water this week, making the marina a spectacle of massive sportfishing vessels, excited crews, and eager fans.

“This marina’s filled with boats — the entire thing,” said Event Director Robbie Carter. “About 95% of our vessels traveled from out of state. The excitement, the casino, the camaraderie, the parties — our sponsors have really rolled it out for everybody.”

Carter estimates six to eight anglers per team, creating a strong presence of talent and energy along the Gulf Coast. “Out there on the battlefield, you’ve got some seriously talented anglers — and there’s almost $2 million in payouts this year. It’s huge.”

Now in its 29th year, the tournament has grown into one of the most prestigious sportfishing events in the Gulf of Mexico. “There’s nothing like it anywhere else. It’s the biggest sportfishing event in the Gulf, and it’s right here in Biloxi.”

The action continues throughout the week, with the much-anticipated weigh-ins scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Saturday is expected to draw the largest crowds, as boats return with blue marlin, tuna, dolphin, and wahoo.

“We’ll have t-shirts for everybody,” Carter added. “Just come out and enjoy it.”

With big fish, big crowds, and even bigger payouts, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Billfish Classic continues to be a summer tradition — and a major catch for the city of Biloxi.
