Andre Reed hypothesizes his career after 2004
Six of the seven all time highest scoring seasons by an NFL team have happened since the league adopted illegal contact rules in 2004.
Less bump and run means more passing and more passing means more points. The evolution of the passing game has led to inflated quarterback numbers with eight of the nine 5,000 yard passing seasons also having come post 2004.
Cause and effect would make pass catchers the beneficiaries, especially after the league altered its illegal contact rule in 2014, disallowing the defense to initiate contact after five yards all together.
Yesterday, NFL Hall of Fame Wide Receiver Andre Reed was in Pascagoula. He offered up an interesting theory on what his career would have been like in this new age of keep your hands to yourself and touchdown celebrations. “Bro, I probably would have caught 1,000 more passes. Yeah, it’s a different game than it was 15, 16 years ago when I played. This is an entertainment business and they want to see guys score touchdowns and now they brought back the celebrations too so. Oh gosh, we’re going to have to get ready for all kinds of stuff. It’s like get in the end zone and just go back to the huddle, so. But I was an old school guy, I didn’t do all that dancing stuff. So I just thought that I respected the end zone because it’s seldom you got in there and so the league is changing year in and year out for different reasons.”
Reed was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014.
