Amtrak to resume service on Mississippi Gulf Coast
Amtrak passenger rail service will soon resume on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
The Mobile City Council voted this morning to approve three resolutions that will enable the Mobile to New Orleans run to begin soon — after a rail platform is built in the city.
Once service starts, there will be two runs along the Gulf Coast each day — at 6:30am and 4:30pm from Mobile to New Orleans — with stops in Pascagoula, Biloxi, Gulfport and Bay St. Louis along the way.
There is no official word on when the passenger rail will begin service, but it is expected that it will be in the first quarter of 2025.
Southern Rail Commission Chairman Knox Ross said in part, “the commission has worked hard to get to this point.”
Ross went on to say the return of Amtrak to the Gulf Coast will have a great return on investment and an impact in connecting people in our local communities through jobs and tourism.
Mississippi Senator Roger Wicker also applauding the deal, saying in part: “Restoring Amtrak services to the Mississippi Gulf Coast has been a years-long effort and one of many to help the region recover from Hurricane Katrina. This will reconnect the Gulf Coast states and provide an alternative way to move people safely, which could also reduce traffic on our roadways.”
