Amnesty period begins in Moss Point
Several people have already stopped by the Moss Point Police Department to take advantage of a limited time offer to pay off outstanding fines without fear of being arrested.
Today began the first day of the amnesty period and residents of Moss Point have a little more than a month to come in and pay on their old fines or establish a payment plan. Bench warrants will be waived for anyone who voluntarily comes in, saving them about $250.
You can stop by the Moss Point Police Department between 8 and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday between now and May 1st. You must be able to pay at least half of your outstanding balance. Patrol Commander Lt. Henry Bouganin said, “It’s to recoup some funds for the city, but it’s also to help people who are trying to get their driver’s license straight and actually to save them money. We say there’s an initial $250 of savings, but if you get stopped at a traffic stop and then they tow your vehicle, you’re adding hundreds of more dollars to that. It’s actually to help the citizens.”
Following this period, the police department will actively pursue those who have warrants. If you have any questions about the program you can call the county clerk’s office at 228-474-3644.
