It’s a lengthy road to officially enter our country and become a United States citizen. America welcomes twenty three people from across the world who are now the newest U.S. citizens.

With a vision of broad stripes and bright stars in their hearts, families filled the federal courthouse in Gulfport as twenty three immigrants officially became citizens of our country. Nishu Gupta, a doctor from India, tells News 25 her children are the reason she wanted to become an American citizen. “There’s a lot of opportunity here so I thought my kids’ futures would be much better in this country.”
Tears were shed as people from Vietnam, Mexico, Jamaica, Thailand, and all across the world took the oath to our country. Jula Barr, from Italy, has wanted to say the pledge of allegiance as a United States citizen for 15 years. “I want it for myself and my family as well. It’s such a great opportunity being part of this country and I see my life here with my son and my husband.”
Barr works at the Seabee Base in Gulfport with her husband. Her 13-year-old son James was at the ceremony. “It just made me happy because she’s been trying so hard for it. I’m proud of her.”
The citizens now have the right to vote, the freedom to express themselves, and the right to practice any religion of their choice. Some have worked very hard and waited very long to finally see this day come. “I feel very great, very energetic, and blessed,” said Gupta.
