Amazing Women of South Mississippi: Highlighting Velma Barker

WXXV News 25 continues its brand-new segment highlighting some phenomenal women in the area called ‘Amazing Women of South Mississippi.’

This week we are highlighting Velma Barker to talk about her service in the community.

Velma has spent over 35 years serving as a bus monitor with Gulfport School District Bus Services, which later became First Student.

She is an active and vibrant member of St. Therese Catholic Church. She volunteers at the food pantry and is a member of the choir.

Velma also implemented Backpack Buddies a few years ago at Central Elementary School. This initiative was initially funded by her personal contributions and proceeds from snack sales at her job. Her efforts ensured that children have access to nutritious meals, even outside of school hours.
