Altercation on school bus recorded; parent files report with Jackson County

The family of a child who was allegedly punched and kicked on a school bus has filed a report with the Jackson County Sheriff’s Department.

That information was confirmed through the sheriff’s department.

An 18-second video of the altercation which was sent to WXXV as well as being posted on social media, shows a boy being hit by multiple other children on a bus.

The person sending the video said it was on a bus from St. Martin Middle School — and that the incident took place while the bus was still at the school.

The parent whose child recorded the incident said as the father of three who attend the school, he was not comfortable having them ride the bus and went to the school Wednesday morning to remove them.

In addition to sending the video to WXXV, the parent also sent it to Jackson County Sheriff and the school district.

The parent also said the only comment made to him by school officials is that they were reviewing the video.

An employee at the school said the school, “has no comment on that matter. It’s still under investigation.”

WXXV also reached out to the Jackson County School District. Superintendent David Baggett was not available to speak, according to an assistant at the district.

She did say that Mr. Baggett told her he was unable to comment on anything related to the students.

According to bus policies published on the Jackson County School District website, “It shall be the duty of the passengers transported in school buses owned and operated by the Jackson County School District to conduct themselves in an orderly manner. The passengers shall abide by rules and regulations of the State Board of Education and rules and regulations adopted by the Board of Education of the Jackson County School District.

“At the beginning of each school year, students will be given the Student Handbook which contains the school bus rules and regulations. Student cooperation is imperative. Student behavior which does not conform to these rules and regulations will result in the appropriate disciplinary action as stated in the Student Handbook.”

Students who are found to be fighting can be suspended and/or expelled, according to school policy.
