After cutting down 200-year-old oak tree, Long Beach moves forward with Hotel

It’s been over a year since a 200-year-old oak tree was cut down here in Long Beach on Jeff Davis Avenue for an 8-million-dollar development, but there is not much happening on the land.

The development of a boutique hotel is still happening but has taken longer than expected after the developers changed the design plans, upgrading to three stories with nearly 30 rooms.

They expect to break ground sometime this summer. There is a possibility of a new restaurant and other economic development to follow.

Mayor George Bass was out of office when the tree was cut. He tells us that the remaining tree is here to stay.

“I’m very optimistic that it is going to be taken care of. We’ve insisted on that,” Bass said. “That an arborist works with them to maintain sustainability and that’s my goal. I want this tree to remain I want it to be taken care of properly, and I think the developer probably feels the same way because it’s an amenity to have that in place.”

We will continue to follow this development.
