Adopt a Grandparent Day celebration in Gulfport

Adopt a Grandparent Day is set for September 11th and they are in need of volunteers to help pack the senior gift bags.

Lee and Kathy Rodgers founded Adopt a Grandparent Day in 2014 as a day sat aside to recognize and honor the life and value of the elderly in our society by providing them with love and affection.

According to statistics, about 50 percent of people residing in nursing homes have no close relatives, 46 percent have no living children, and 60 percent have no outside visitors.

The event started out in 19 facilities across three counties, but has now expanded to six counties.

Kathy Rogers says after her mother was put in a nursing home in 2013, she realized how many residents looked forward to her visits. “We are here to honor the elderly. So, I want to do that. When you have people that are just taken somewhere and dropped off, their life is devalued. So, at a time in their life where they should be being cared for, a lot of times they are being rejected and they are struggling with rejection and abandonment and depression and all those things.”

Adopt a Grandparent Day will take place September 11th. Goodie bags will be packed on September 4th with the help of volunteers. Those looking to donate can visit their website at adoptagrandparentday.org.
