Adopt a forever pet from Jackson County Animal Shelter
The Jackson County Animal Shelter hosted the second and final day of their annual pet adoption drive in Ocean Springs yesterday.
It came at a critical time for the shelter which has been close to reaching maximum capacity due to low adoption rates.
Volunteer Coordinator Maridee Mallette says it was a great opportunity for the animals to get away from the shelter to enjoy some fresh air, exercise, and sunshine.
She introduced us to just one dog out of many who are overdue for a new home. Adoption Coordinator Maridee Mallette said, “This is Helen. She’s our longest resident at Jackson County Animal Shelter. She is good with dogs and kids. She’s very sweet. She’s been here almost ten months. She’s just great. I love her, I don’t know why she hasn’t been adopted yet.”
We also caught up with one woman who said she had no idea she would adopt a dog yesterday, but she formed a connection with Bones immediately. “Yeah, I just came for the festival, and I was not planning on getting a dog. But I think he kind of chose me in a way. We actually already have one standard American bulldog named Johnny. We lost his sister Dixie a few months back, and so I think he’s going to have a new brother, and I think he’s going to have a great companion, and I think they’re going to be good for each other. I think he’s going to be a great addition to our family!”
Annie said the adoption drive was a great opportunity to get to know Bones and find out if he would fit in with her family.
If you missed this event and want to adopt a new furry friend, you have options. Not only is the Jackson County Animal Shelter open for adoptions year-round, but they are also hosting their annual Sophia Myers Pet Adoption and Donation Drive at Quake’s Ice Creamery on Saturday, November 11th from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.
