Active Forest Fire Threatens Homes

Helicopters swarmed the skies in Jackson County today tracking an active forest fire.
Officials believe the fire began on private property off Grand Bature Road in Moss Point around 4 p.m. on Thursday. More than two dozen agencies have been working to control the fire which has already ripped through hundreds of acres in Jackson County. If the fire continues on its current path, the Grand Bay Research Reserve and other homes in the area may be in harm’s way.
Melissa Perez with the MS Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge said, “There’s a lot of underbrush and of course, we got the tall marsh grasses and it doesn’t take much for those to go up, combine that with the wind that we’re getting, around 20 miles an hour, and that’s really the perfect recipe to push that fire forward and that’s what we have been seeing since 4 o’clock yesterday.”
Crews will continue to assess the fire as they battle to contain it.
