A Look Inside Jobs Corps’ New Dorms
Today the Gulfport Job Corps opened the doors of its new dormitory to the community, allowing residents the chance check out the digs where residential students will live.
The new facility boasts several community living spaces, separate dorm rooms, computer labs, laundry rooms and even four independent living spaces for students preparing to graduate. Since they got back in operation in 2010, the Gulfport Job Corps has worked to get back to the 220 students they were able to house before Katrina. Now they’re almost halfway there with the ability to house more than 100 with this new dorm. Job Corps Acting Center Director Lillie Graves said, “We’re excited about the new dorm and so are our students. We’re in hopes that we will eventually be excited about a new facility so that we can serve more students.”
Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes said, “They do a great job with the assets that they have but we’re working with our congressional delegation, particularly Senator Cochran’s office, to get additional funding to really do a proper expansion here and serve the needs of the entire Coast and South Mississippi.”
The mission of the Job Corps is to provide training for youth between the ages of 16 and 24 to get career technical training and to assist them with job placement.
