A Fresh Face on History
Visitors who pay a visit to some of Biloxi’s historical landmarks will get a fresh take on the city’s history.
Some new markers, complete with color pictures and paragraphs explaining the significance of each location, can be found around Biloxi. The city used FEMA funding to replace 10 Katrina-destroyed stainless steel markers that had dated back to the Blessey administration back in the 80’s. You can find markers at the lighthouse, the Biloxi Cemetery and Point Cadet, just to name a few.
Since tourism is such an integral part of Biloxi’s past, present and future, you’ll find a marker at the visitor’s center explaining the evolution of tourism in the city. Vincent Creel with the City of Biloxi said, “These markers help define us as a community. We’ve got thousands of people who go down to Point Cadet every year for different events, now there’s a marker there explaining how it used to be a Coast Guard barracks there. It was a Coast Guard base. They understand why that area is significant and the history of that area.”
So far, 10 markers are spread out around Biloxi. The city is welcoming suggestions for future marker locations.
