A check-in with Gulfport athletics before their big Friday night test

It’s week three of Friday night lights for our Gulf Coast teams, and many programs are pleased with their performances so far.

Gulfport high school has started off the season undefeated, 2-0, and they did not let another team score against them until their sixth quarter this year. Along with the Admiral’s success this season, their athletic department is on the rise winning the state championship in boy’s powerlifting, making it to the championship battle in girls soccer, baseball, and even tennis, but they fell short to Madison Central in April.

Tonight is a rematch for the Admirals as they host a very talented 2-0 Madison Central football program.

“We’ve had a lot of success the last couple of years and really for a long time, but it seems like we’ve been playing for some state championships lately, and we’re looking to take it to the next level in football at this point, ” said Matt Walters, “If we want to win state championships, we have got to play teams like Madison Central, and so that is why it is kind of exciting to get a little bit of a litmus test of where we stand.”

“We’ve gotten off to a really good start, you know, we have talked about a revolution when Coach Pennock came, and we have won the first couple of battles of that revolution, and now we are getting tested big time, so we are excited about it,” said Walters.
