A California man will spend 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the 2022 shooting death of a man in Gulfport.

22-year-old Mikhari Seven Gasaway of Los Angeles pleaded guilty to second degree murder, aggravated assault and tampering with evidence in the shooting death of 27-year-old Brushawn McClam and the wounding of 21-year-old Kenisha McClain on June 21, 2022.

He was sentenced to 50 years with 20 suspended, but will serve 30 years day-for-day without possibility for early release. He also will serve 5 years of probation.

Kenisha McClain said a man entered their apartment about midnight and shot the siblings. Police were able to track the suspect using video surveillance from more than 20 locations, locating him at another apartment complex. In an interview with detectives, Gasaway admitted to shooting the victims when he learned the person he was talking to on a dating app was a man. He also admitted deleting all messages between him and McClam after the shooting.

During the plea hearing, Judge Lisa Dodson stated, “Why didn’t you just walk out? I can’t fathom why you would react so viscerally as to shoot somebody. No one did anything to you. The family will suffer forever, and you will have this long sentence.”
