Blessing of the Classics
With all things ‘Cruisin’ the Coast’ going on this week, it wouldn’t be the same without the ‘Blessings of the Classics.’
More than 600 classic cars paraded through the City of Diamondhead, not only showing off the different makes and models, but receiving a blessing along the way.
The event ended with a block party including live music, food, and a classic car showcase.
Local and Cruisin’ officials say this is a unique event enjoyable for the entire family. Blessing of the Classics Committee Chairman Mark Duffy said, “You see Father Patty, my Catholic priest. You see the Reverend Jason Edwards here. They’re having a great time and everybody gets a blessing certificate and they do literally get their cars blessed by a priest.”
Diamondhead Mayor Tommy Schafer said, “It was an idea developed back in 2013 after watching ‘Blessing of the Fleet.’ I said, ‘why don’t we have a blessing of the classics.’ I spoke with the president of ‘Cruisin’ the Coast’ and he said ‘well, we’ll give it a try because that’s not on the Coast.’ Seven years later, we’re still here.”
