Conservation Education Field Day

It was fun on the farm for some fourth graders in Harrison County today.

It’s an interactive way to learn about Mississippi’s unique environment. Fourth-grade students from 28th Street Elementary School in Gulfport made the trip to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Farm to learn more about nature and ways they can protect it. Student Javarion Boyd said, “We’re learning about new things that we never learned about in class and it’s just a fun field trip.”

Harrison County Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioner Patrick Chubb said, “Our youth are the ones that really need to be exposed to environmental conservation of our natural resources because they’re the ones who are going to carry it forward for the next generations.”

Put on by the Harrison County Soil and Water Conservation District, Conservation Education Field Day has been an educational staple in the community for over 30 years.

Students moved through different stations throughout the day, learning about different aspects of their environment. One popular station featured a recycling relay race designed to help kids learn hands-on about the best objects to recycle. 4H County Extension Coordinator Sheran Watkins said, “We wanted them to learn, but have fun while they’re learning. What other way than using a recycle relay for the kids to burn off some energy, but have fun, and they will remember it because they’ve learned by doing.”

Students like Cameron Woods view the field day and the knowledge it provides as an experience they’ll remember for a long time. “It’s a lifetime experience for me because there are different experiments and stuff that we haven’t even done in the classroom.”
