Coast Electric holds ‘Operation Round-Up’

It’s not often someone gets excited about a raise in their electric bill, but a simple increase of just a few cents a month is what’s making the change in nonprofits here on the Coast.

It’s called ‘Operation Round-Up,’ a program in which members of the electric company round up their bills to the nearest dollar. Those pennies all go back into the community in the form of grants.

Community Development Executive Janell Nolan says since January this year, the generosity of their members provided 28 grants, totaling about $160,000. “Without their spare change, I hope that they understand it might be two cents one month, 37 cents the next month, but the maximum amount any one member can donate in one year is $11.88. So, collectively, with over 79,000 members participating in the program we’re able to make a huge difference in our communities.”

Nonprofits from Harrison, Hancock, and Pearl River counties joined together in this morning ‘Operation Round-Up’ seminar to learn how their nonprofit can apply for their upcoming grant selection in November.

Janell says applications are only available online.
