Learn to play chess with the Mississippi Coast Chess Club

Looking for a chess club to join? The Mississippi Coast Chess Club meets at Newks in Gulfport each Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Whether you’re a chess rook, queen, or king, all skill levels are accepted by the Mississippi Chess Club.

The group is a friendly, informal club for socializing over good food and casual games of chess.

It’s free to join and there is no board of officers, just a relaxing get-together for casual play. Everyone of all ages and skill level are welcome.

Even if you’ve never played before someone is there to teach you. MS Coast Chess Club President Jerry McDonald said. “I’ve been playing chess for quite a while about 20 years or so. I moved down to the Gulf Coast about ten years ago and there was no chess club. So, finally I decided to start one myself. I would say four months ago with one or two people and it’s grown to 20 or more per week.”

For the first time, the chess club is turning up the heat. Their first competition ‘Battle by the Beach’ is August 27th. For more information visit their Facebook page at Mississippi Coast Chess Club.
