Man shot by officer at Alabama elementary school hosting summer program

A scary morning at an elementary school in Gadsden, Alabama today when police shot and killed a man.

Police say someone called and said a man was trying to get inside the school. The principal said the man was going to several doors.

The principal locked the school down and called the resource officer. The man tried to force his way into a patrol car.

When the resource officer tried to stop him, the man resisted and tried to take the officer’s gun and that’s when the officer shot him. Etowah County Sheriff Jonathan Horton said, “From the school resource officer’s standpoint, he did exactly what should be done. He went straight to the threat, he confronted it, and he dealt with it, and it ended in unfortunately the death of the suspect but that’s the safest alternative to keep that threat out of that school.”

The resource officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

There were kids inside for a summer program when all of this happened, but officials say they were not hurt.
