Seabees celebrate 80th anniversary
The Naval Construction Battalion Center celebrated the 80th birthday of the U.S. Navy Seabees today with a cake-cutting ceremony at Colmer Dining Facility on the Gulfport base.
The Seabees were established in 1942 during World War II and the Gulfport base’s origins also date back to that time when the land was acquired in April and the advanced base depot was established June 2nd, 1942 in Gulfport.
So, it’s not only the 80th anniversary of the Seabees, but also the Gulfport Seabee Base.
The Seabees moved their Atlantic fleet home from Davisville, Rhode Island to Gulfport in the mid-1960s.
