MNA Coin and Currency Show

For the past 58 years, the MNA Coin Club has hosted shows throughout the state. Now, for the first time since 2005, the MNA’s Coin and Currency Show returns to the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center.

The 58th annual event draws in various dealers and collectors from across the country.  MNA President Norman Carnovale said, “There are people here from about ten different states. The people that come here are coming here because when you move around the country, you get different things offered to you from different people that come.”

While collecting is considered a hobby, it also can be an investment with most collectibles holding their value for years. “That’s the easiest thing to do is to spend your money. When you get involved in this particular hobby and you’re spending your money, you’re getting something you’re taking home with you and you’re keeping it. As a rule, it goes up in value.”

While collecting coins is a common practice, some fear that it could be a lost art among the younger generation which could be detrimental to the hobby. MNA Treasurer Jim Ratliff said, “Today, kids are more interested in their electronic devices. We try to get kids involved because a lot of history. There’s a lot of American history in the coin collecting.”

Organizations like the Biloxi Coin Club are set up at the show, teaching children and those interested in collecting about the hobby. The coin and currency show continues Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free and the show is open to the public.
