Preparing for the 2019 hurricane season
It’s hard to believe, but in just over one month the 2019 Atlantic Hurricane Season will officially begin.
Hundreds of meteorologists, emergency managers, and weather enthusiasts are gathered in New Orleans this week for the annual National Hurricane Conference.
The four day event is aimed at improving hurricane preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation in order to save lives and property.
News 25 spoke to experts from the National Hurricane Center and the message remains the same as years past: preparation is key to staying safe from all tropical threats. Experts say over and over again not to just focus on the category of the storm. National Hurricane Center Hurricane Specialist Robbie Berg said, “What we like to do is specifically focus on each hazard. The wind is going to affect a certain group of people. The storm surge is going to affect a certain group of people. The heavy rainfall is going to affect a certain group of people, and then the tornadoes are going to affect maybe even a different set of people. How do you classify all of those into one number? It’s nearly impossible.”
New 25 spoke to multiple experts from the National Hurricane Center and you can hear more from them during our 2019 Hurricane Special set to air May 31st at 6:30 p.m. on FOX and NBC.
