Kicking off the 2022 Blessing of the Fleet festivities
This year’s Shrimp King was announced during the annual Biloxi Blessing of the Fleet photo session and poster unveiling ceremony.
The 93-year tradition marks the beginning of shrimp season. Tonight kicks off festivities for the annual Blessing of the Fleet event which is Sunday, May 29th.
This year’s poster is illustrated by Samantha Rae Breland Savage, who currently lives in Grand Bay Alabama, but originally is from Pascagoula.
The 2022 Shrimp King is Joseph Powell, who tells News 25 he is happy to be a part of the tradition. “It feels great being with everybody, being a part of this annual event. Every year it goes on and it’s looked forward to by the shrimp industry and I’m very glad to be a part of it.”
King Powell first started his shrimping career in his early 20s. After he got married, he processed shrimp for 51 years until he retired in 2010.
