Report: USM head basketball coach linked to Nebraska

When Doc Sadler took over as the head men’s basketball coach at Southern Miss in 2014, it wasn’t necessarily a destination job. The first few years were spent cleaning up after Donnie Tyndall and the NCAA sanctions he left behind.

But, just as USM is starting to regain its traction following the darkest point in program history, Sadler could be leaving behind a much more enticing position than the one he took over.

Tonight, conflicting reports are tying Sadler to Nebraska where he served as the head coach from 2007 to 2012.

According to Huskeronline.com, an unidentified source is claiming Sadler to be under consideration for a full-time assistant position on Fred Hoiberg’s new staff.

However, in a report from the Sun Herald, Sadler says he has no current agreement to leave Southern Miss, but admits he has had conversations with Hoiberg before and after he accepted the job late last month.

A separate source tells News 25 Sadler’s departure is imminent, but leaves the door open for something to change in the coming days.

In 2019, Sadler led the Golden Eagles to an overall mark of 20-13 on their way to the semifinals of the C-USA Tournament and their first trip back to the post-season in five years.
