The return of the Special Olympics at the YMCA
Athletes from Jackson, George, and Greene County hit the water at the Mississippi Gulf Coast YMCA for the 2022 Special Olympics aquatic heat.
During the opening ceremonies, it was nothing but smiles and applause for the athletes who have waited over two years to compete due to COVID. It was an event missed equally by the participants and YMCA staff members.
For over 30 years, the YMCA has welcomed athletes to show their talents, inspiring others to overcome any obstacle in their way. Mississippi Gulf Coast YMCA CEO Jara Miller said, “Bringing everyone together to cheer people on. It’s just a heartwarming event for us. It’s heartwarming for the volunteers and it is an exciting moment for our Special Olympians.”
The event was sponsored by the Bacot McCarty Foundation. The athletes who medaled today will move on to the statewide competition at Keesler Air Force Base on May 13th.
