Martin Luther King Jr. Celebrations in Biloxi

Here on the Gulf Coast, a group wants to make sure everyone, especially the youth, remembers Dr. King’s sacrifice for justice with a coast wide celebration.

Things kickoff tomorrow and go through the beginning of next week. People who attend can expect a gospel music concert featuring songs from the late Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin’s gospel album.

Saturday at 10, the Village Social Justice Symposium will be held at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Park Campus.

Monday, things wrap up with a parade with Biloxi City Councilman Felix Gines as the grand marshal. The parade rolls through downtown Biloxi and the battle of the bands also takes place. Event chairman Allytra Perryman said, “This year we are featuring high school bands from around the area. We will have bands from New Orleans, Mobile, and Jackson coming out to show their excitement as ‘drum majors for justice.’”

The MLK Coastwide Committee has been around since 1986. For more information about this weekend’s events, visit the MLK Coastwide Celebration Facebook page.
