Twelfth Night Celebration

Over the weekend, the sixth annual Twelfth Night Celebration made their way down the streets of Biloxi.

The reigning royal court of the Gulf Coast Carnival shut off the Christmas lights at the Biloxi Lighthouse to signal the end of Christmas season and the official start of carnival.

The crew then boarded floats, parading down to Biloxi City Hall to light the hall purple.

Food and drinks were served at city hall to the many locals on-hand to ring in the start of Mardi Gras. Biloxi Historical Administrator Bill Raymond said, “We’ve been doing it for over 100 years. I think we’re going on our 110th year this year celebrating Mardi Gras. It’s really about family and bringing out the culture of Biloxi.”

Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich said, “The beginning of Mardi Gras and we ended the Christmas season, New Year’s season by turning the lights off at the lighthouse, but really this has the Mardi Gras look and feel, the parade feel, right here at city hall.”

King D’Iberville Keith Williams said, “The Gulf Coast has a tremendous Mardi Gras. It’s really family oriented. We expect everybody, all the families, to come out and enjoy it. It’s a very safe environment. It’s a great time.”

On February 9th, the Lucedale Carnival Association and Krewe of Pearl will be the first parades to roll in Mississippi this Mardi Gras season.
