All Aboard the Biloxi Shrimping Trip
The oldest Coast attraction in the City of Biloxi is back! All aboard the Sailfish.
They closed their season early last year and opened late to make some much needed repairs to their vessel.
Visitors can once again experience a shrimping expedition aboard the legendary Sailfish. It is the oldest Coast attraction in the City of Biloxi and she was almost retired. Captain Mike Moore said, “Everybody loves this old historical boat, but she’s kind of expensive to keep up and the type of repairs I needed to do was like I had a choice of do I build a brand-new vessel or do I keep the girl that’s been around since 1952 alive.”
The season opening was delayed because the boat underwent a complete restoration, everything from the water line to the rail has been replaced. This is the first-time repairs of this extent have been made to the Sailfish. “Probably changed about 45 ribs in the boat and we changed the bow stem and we also changed what’s known as the knee of the boat which is basically all the major hardware of the boat.”
You can board the Sailfish with Captain Moore on one of their daily shrimping tours. They depart from the same spot they’ve been at since the 1950s, the Biloxi Small Craft Harbor. Tours set sail at 10:30, 1:30, and 3:30. “This year, we missed the peak of Spring Break. We would have done really well if we were in the water. We had to do what we had to do to keep her for another 70 years, but the phone is still ringing and I’m very optimistic that everyone will do quite well this year.”
