Coast Guard celebrates 228th birthday
They’re usually the first on scene when it comes to maritime rescues and they protect our nation’s economic, national, and border security. Today, the U.S. Coast Guard celebrates 228 years of service.
It’s a common sight and a wave of relief for anyone stranded in the water: the United States Coast Guard. They’re usually on the front lines when it comes to water rescue and securing our borders, but on this day members from all branches of the military were on hand to celebrate a major milestone. Air Force Veteran Jack Hicks said, “I think it’s awesome to recognize the various uniformed services and what they do for the country and what they have done for the country. It feels good to be able to celebrate their birthday.”
Hick is an Air Force veteran, but was among those in the crowd to celebrate the 228th birthday of the U.S. Coast Guard Thursday at the Armed Force Retirement Home in Gulfport. Ninety-one year-old Navy veteran Charles Jenkins was also at the ceremony. He says even now, 47 years after his retirement, he still feels a sense of pride when any branch of the military is honored. “I’ve been all over this world and I have never been respected and treated as well as I have on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi with salute to the military. We can all celebrate together and honor this great nation together.”
These Coast Guard pilots and members are happy that they get to come and celebrate with these veterans on such a monumental occasion because these veterans have already done so much for our country. Coast Guard Pilot AST2 Graham McGinnis said, “We are standing on the shoulders of giants with these guys. The ability to come over here and show our appreciation for them and what they’ve done for our country means the world to us.”
With the American flag flying high and spirits soaring even higher, this commemoration will likely be something these veterans reflect upon for years to come.
