Hancock Co. father and son sentenced for roles in death

A father and son have been sentenced for their roles in the death of a man whose body was discovered wrapped in carpet along Interstate 10 last November.

Terry Smith pled guilty to manslaughter and tampering with evidence. He received 22 years behind bars. His son, Carl Smith, also received a 22 year sentence after pleading guilty to accessory after the fact and tampering with evidence.

Philip Whitaker was shot multiple times at Carl’s home in the Kiln last year. His body was discovered just one week after Hancock County Sheriff’s Department asked for help in finding him.
