New Orleans Saints Training Camp: Day 2

Cat’s out of the bag on New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara who enters his second NFL training camp as the reigning offensive rookie of the year and number one option on the depth chart for the first four weeks.

That means no protection from Mark Ingram during that four game suspension, but Kamara may not need it. In 2017, he paced all qualified rushers in yards per carry with a clip of 6.1.

Not far behind him was his Pro Bowl running mate with Ingram averaging 4.9 yards per tote, good for fourth in the league.

Together, Boom and Zoom both have the ability to bust at any moment, even when the running back by committee prevents them from getting in a rhythm. “Like you said, as a running back I think you do to a certain extent. But it goes for Mark, too. I think sometimes Mark gets in there and he might first run pop something off, or if I get in there I might pop a big play off. I mean I think it’s just the mentality you have to wherever or whenever you touch the ball you’ve just got to make a big play. I don’t think it’s – sometimes it’s a feel thing as the game gets going it’s a feel thing, but we just want to make big plays, period,” said Kamara.

According to Pro Football Focus, Kamara had the highest single-season elusive rating for any rookie running back dating back to the 2006 season.
